LOVE THE LAKE
The locals consider Marsh Creek Lake the main area attraction. Smack dab in the middle of the over 1,700-acre state park is the sprawling lake. Water activities include sailing, fishing, paddle boarding, and kayaking as well as year-round tours such as the Fall Foliage Pontoon Ride and Full Moon Tour. If you don’t have your own kayak, motorboat or fishing pole, you can rent one at the lake – no reservation required. While spending the day playing on the water, take in the flocks of migratory waterfowl who just like you, are taking a pit stop at Marsh Creek Lake.
TAKE IN THE TOWN HISTORY
Many Pennsylvanians know about Marsh Creek Lake, but may not know the secrets of the sunken city that lies under it. The manmade lake was created in 1974 as an additional source of drinking water for Chester County. But several years before that, in 1883, Milford Mills, a small hamlet with a schoolhouse, bridge, general store and row houses, thrived. The small town was also the location of a bustling 44-room mansion, equipped with a bar (during the Prohibition) and run by local gangster Max Boo Boo Huff. Years later, the government decided to dam the nearby river to create a water basin, marking the end of Milford Mills. Legend has it that remnants of the forgotten hamlet can be spotted below Marsh Creek Lake, so you may want to keep your eyes peeled.

PERUSE HOMES WITH A VIEW
On the banks of Marsh Creek State Park, the newly developed homes by builder Moser Homes are worth exploring if you have the time. We favor the 27 homes in the Marsh Lea Community because each acre-plus lot has either a lakefront or lake view of shimmering Marsh Creek Lake. The styles range from traditional cottages to modern farm house, with front porches, 3-car garages, fireside family rooms and Hardie® siding and trim on the exterior.
LACE UP YOUR HIKING BOOTS
With the nearby Marsh Creek State Park, there are over 18 miles of hiking trails around the lake, so you’ll want to be sure to pack some high-energy snacks and your hiking boots. In the summer months, you’ll see hikers and mountain bikers on the paths. Come winter, ice skating and ice fishing become the activity of choice. If you’re looking for a moderate trail option, check out Marsh Creek Trail, the 7.4-mile loop with views of the lake. On the trail, look and listen, you’ll likely see and hear some of the most-commonly sighted birds, including Canada Goose, red-tailed hawk, red-bellied woodpecker and mallards.

EAT AT THE EAGLE
The Eagle Tavern is a local staple that has been a part of the community for hundreds of years. Nowadays, the chef adds a contemporary twist to the menu, but the history of the space remains true. Head to the porch dining area on the first floor for views and a breeze while you slurp fresh (never frozen) Day Boat Scallops, served with tasty local vegetables. If you’re in the mood for filet mignon and a glass of red wine, the inviting dining room is the place for you. Or if live music and a cucumber martini are calling your name, make your way upstairs to the Taproom, where you’ll find a cocktail lounge and modern bar.
